Boxing: 83rd Annual Bengal Bouts Semis. Bengal Bouts is an annual Men’s Boxing tournament held by the University, the purpose of which is to raise money for the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh.

Feb 27, 2013 (DeBartolo Performing Arts Center) 7:00-8:30pm.
Concert: Metropolitan Opera’s Isabel Leonard, mezzo soprano. Highly acclaimed for her “passion intensity and remarkable vocal beauty” Isabel Leonard continues to make waves in the world of classical music both at home in the United States and abroad. Consists of South American songs followed by worlds of American composers.

Lecture: Making a Living Making a Difference Series: “Alta Gracia: Changing Lives One Shirt At A Time”. Run: Race for the Heroes 5K or 10K run. All proceeds from the race will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization that supports wounded veterans. Registration begins at 8 a.m., the race starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Clarke Memorial Fountain (Race course loops around campus)

March 2, 2013 (Washington Hall) 7:00pm-10:00pm.
Concert: 55th Annual Collegiate jazz Festival. Performances by well-known jazz programs from around the country as well as ND’s own Jazz Band and its New Orleans Brass Band. Hosted in a Mardi Gras theme, tickets are free for students both nights.

March 3, 2013 (Basilica) 7:15-8:15pm.
Concert: Vespers Concert featuring the Notre Dame Folk Choir. The Notre Dame Folk Choir will sing following Sunday evening Vespers in the Lady Chapel of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. All are welcome to attend.

In recognition of May Day, the Higgins Labor Studies and the Institute for Latino Studies are proud to present:

Wed., May 2, 7 pm, Browning Cinema at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center

“Bread and Roses” tells the story of immigrant janitors in their quest for dignity and a voice on the job in 1990s Los Angeles.  The film dramatically showcases the link between the causes of labor and immigrant rights, and our program aims to bring together those whose teaching, research, service, and advocacy reflect those causes:  Higgins Labor Studies Program, Institute for Latino Studies, La Casa de Amistad, and the North Central Indiana AFL-CIO Council.  Following the film, we’ll have a panel discussion with participation from:

• Cynthia Duarte, Fellow at the Institute for Latino Studies at Notre Dame and sociologist who specializes in immigration patterns and urban communities in the context of contemporary globalization.
• Tony Flora, President of the North Central Indiana AFL-CIO Council, the federation of local labor unions in greater South Bend.
• Marisel Moreno, Assistant Professor of Spanish at Notre Dame and a specialist in US Latino/a literature.
• Rudy Monterrosa, immigration attorney, adjunct professor of law at ND, and president of the board of La Casa de Amistad, an organization providing educational, cultural, and advocacy services the Michiana Latino/a community.

This is a public screening, with tickets on sale through the Browning box office, but we have *complimentary tickets* as part of our agreement with the DPAC.  Rather than distributing those tickets by hand, we will keep a guest list.  Request a free ticket (or 2!) by emailing Dan Graff at dgraff@nd.edu.  Hope you can join us!

Rape, sexual assault, sexual abuse and domestic violence are often labeled “crimes of silence” because of low reporting rates and social discomfort with their public discussion. The purpose of Take Back the Night is literally for men and women to break the silence surrounding this violence with voices of prayer, chanting and the sharing of stories. It also gives the community an opportunity to do something publicly that takes a stand against the violence of rape and sexual assault done to people in the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s community.

Survivors, allies and all other men and women in the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s community are invited to attend.

Diane Ravitch Lecture on Education

Tuesday, April 10, 7:00pm in the McCartan Court Room of the ND Law School

Diane Ravitch, author of The Life and Death of the Great American School System, will give a lecture this evening at 7:00pm in the McCartan Court Room of the ND Law School.  There are no tickets for the event and seating is first come first serve.  Diane’s speech is sure to be compelling and I’d encourage all of you to attend.  Please also spread the word in your classes tomorrow.  It would be great to have the auditorium filled for someone as insightful and bold as Ravitch.

Ravitch recently won the Daniel Patrick Moynihan Prize of the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences in 2011 for her “careful use of social science research for the public good.”

Since the summer of 2009, David F. Ruccio has been writing a blog on inequality, crisis, and many other aspects of the Second Great Depression. He will discuss the history of the blog – titled Occasional Links and Commentary on Economics, Culture, and Society — as well as what he has learned from its successes and failures.  Participants are encouraged to browse the blog prior to the workshop — and to come with questions, comments, and suggestions.

Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old kid in Sanford, Florida, was shot dead over one month ago.  The man who shot him has not been arrested.  Millions across the country have been gathering, wearing hoodies to express outrage at Trayvon’s death, and to call for the arrest of George Zimmerman.

Thursday, March 29, there will be a Million Hoodie March in South Bend.  Members of PSA are encouraged to attend and to bring a friend. If you would like to split a cab with other PSA members, please arrive at Main Circle at 5:00 pm in a hoodie!  Please RSVP to the PSA email so that we know how many cabs to get.
