Phoenix hospital stipped of “Catholic” after abortion controversy

0

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 21, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A Catholic hospital that performed a direct abortion last year has lost its official endorsement as a Catholic institution by the local bishop.

Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix, Az. announced in a news conference Tuesday morning that St. Joseph’s Hospital was no longer Catholic after it refused to comply with the bishop’s terms, which included renouncing the direct killing of an unborn baby of a woman suffering from pulmonary hypertension, at 11 weeks gestation.

Olmsted said that, “Communication with leadership at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Catholic Healthcare West has only eroded my confidence about their commitment to the church’s ethical and religious directives for health care,” according to local news reports.

“They have not addressed in an adequate manner the scandal caused by the abortion,” said the bishop. “Moreover, I have recently learned that many other violations of the ethical and religious directives have been taking place at Catholic Healthcare West facilities in Arizona throughout my seven years as bishop of Phoenix and far longer.” Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) is the parent company of St. Joseph’s hospital, and is based in California.

In a statement published Wedesday, Olmsted explained that he had “hoped and prayed that this day would not come,” but that it had been a losing battle since he first began discussing with CHW how to resolve its violation of the U.S. bishops’ Ethical and Religious Directives (ERD) seven years ago.

The bishop said that he learned, in only the last several weeks, that both the facility and CHW had administered contraceptives, performed sterilizations, and conducted other direct abortions “due to the mental or physical health of the mother” or after rape or incest.

“In all my seven years as Bishop of Phoenix, I have continued to insist that this scandalous situation needed to change; sadly, over the course of these years, CHW has chosen not to comply,” said Olmsted.

May Christmas remind us of the Gift of Life

From LifeNews.com; Written by Susan Willis

I never tire of hearing Christmas carols – even if they’re being piped into stores and malls just to encourage shopping excesses.

But hearing Christmas tunes recently got me thinking: the decorating frenzy of Christmas trees, lights, garlands, poinsettia plants, and Santa Claus statuary often seems devoid of Christian meaning.

What exactly is being celebrated with all the music, décor, and festivity of the season?

Planned Parenthood money bag

Top companies stop funding Planned Parenthood, Abortion

0

Planned Parenthood money bagLifeNews.com is reporting that more companies are ceasing to fund Planned Parenthood after being added to the boycott list . The boycott list is maintained by Life Decisions International (LDI). The group started its ”Corporate Funding Project” (CFP) 18 years ago to monitor coporate donations given to Planned Parenthood, which performs more than 25% of abortions that occur in the United States each year.

Current names on the list include: Hilton Worldwide Hotels, AOL, Kohl’s, Staples, and the Susan G. Kohmen Foundation.

Names that have recently dropped from the list are: Toys’R'Us, Rolex watch company, Forbes magazine, and Enterprise car rentals.

Some companies that were once on the list but later dropped support for Planned Parenthood have regained membership on the boycott list for having resumed giving corporate donations to PPAA. Such names include: The Gap, Walt Disney, Johnson & Johnson, Nike, Freddie Mac, Chevron, Nationwide Insurance, and Wells Fargo.

“Generally speaking, between the publications of boycott lists, two or three corporations agree to stop funding Planned Parenthood,” LDI president Douglas Scott explained. “The current list was released in July 2010. So, one would expect that two or three corporations on the July 2010 boycott list will not appear on the December 2010 edition.”

LDI saw not just two or three, but at least ten companies drop from the list. This is the biggest drop in a six-month time period that the CFP has seen.

“This should serve as a testament to those who thought it impossible to change corporate philanthropic behavior,” said Kenneth C. Garvey, LDI’s director of communications. ”Corporate officials are learning that those who value life are among the most dedicated people on earth. We will not go away until corporate involvement with Planned Parenthood comes to an end,” he concluded.
